We write to solve problems, to argue a position, to reason from cause to effect, to compare, to express opinions, or just to summarize.  For whatever reason we write, if we want to be effective, we need to learn essay organization and structure.

The Problem-Solution Essay

A Problem-Solution Essay discusses a problem, and then provides a plan for its solution.  We often use this type of essay when we what to persuade others that we have a better idea, or a better plan.

The Cause and Effect Essay

Cause and Effect Essays give reasons why something happened. They explain either the situations or actions that caused something to happen, or they explain the effects from something that happened.

The Compare / Contrast Essay

compare and contrast essay is used to examine similarities and differences between two placespeople or ideas. Writing a compare and contrast essay helps us understand two items from a new perspective.

The Opinion Essay

In an opinion essay the writer attempts to persuade readers that their opinion on a certain controversial subject is correct.

The Argumentative Essay

The argumentative essay expresses an opinion for or against a controversial issue. As the writer, you must establish your position and persuade your readers to agree with you by using strong persuasive language.

The Summary / Response

A summary is a collection of main points and major supporting details of a reading passage. A response is the reader’s evaluation of a passage.


We often need to borrow an idea or concept from an author to support our position. One way we do this is by paraphrasing; putting someone else’s ideas into our own words.
